**NO SPOILERS for John Wick: Chapter 2**
One of the biggest surprises in 2014 was John Wick, an action film starring Keanu Reeves with a ridiculous plot that somehow came together to make a great movie. Now, in 2017, we have the sequel. I was worried that the film wouldn’t compare to the quality of the first. So does John Wick: Chapter 2 fit as a worthy sequel? The quick and simple answer is…yes.
The best parts of this film is when it is self-aware of its ridiculous plot. The opening action sequence is the perfect example of this, with a Russian boss explaining to one of his men how dangerous John Wick is, as John Wick is currently taking out all of the Russian’s men without him knowing it. There are certain scenarios where the movie acknowledges its silliness and it makes the film very entertaining to watch!
The most shining factor of John Wick: Chapter 2 is its action sequences. John Wick had some very fun, fast-pace action sequences that took my breath away. But John Wick: Chapter 2 takes it to another level. The music, camera movements, and Keanu Reeves’ actions all come together to create some impressive, adrenaline-filled moments. The action was more inventive this time around, with each scene being as unique as the last. The first film laid the groundwork for the type of action used in the franchise, and this movie built on that and made something special.
John Wick: Chapter 2 is a fun ride that spends more time developing this world of assassins that John Wick is a part of. The movie gives you more information to process and it’s cool to see just how big this community really is. The returning characters from John Wick have some nice moments in the film that really give their characters more…character.
Where this movie fails is in its storytelling. The plot of this movie wasn’t very original, and was only made as an excuse to get John Wick back into the action. When the movie tried to replicate the emotion of the first one, the pacing of the film really drags on. The “villain” of the film wasn’t unique in anyway and never felt like a threat to The Boogeyman himself.
John Wick: Chapter 2 fails at delivering an engaging story, however, the end of this film does setup for an EPIC finish to the trilogy. I’m not going to go into any details, I just wanted to say that I do not think the third film will suffer from the issues that this film has.
Even with the low-quality of storytelling, this movie was still a VERY enjoyable ride. The expanded lore of the franchise was very interesting, and the action in the film was literally jaw-dropping. I am going to give John Wick: Chapter 2 a GREAT out of 10.
